Testing by PCR is offered
for a number of sexually transmitted diseases. Testing is performed
for three of the most common infections:
Chlamydia trachomatis
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Herpes Simplex Virus type II
Specimen Collection
Cervical swab collected from the cervical
canal. Swab can be sent in transport medium
Male urethral swab - collected 2 hours post
urination. Swab can be sent in transport medium
Urine from both males and females.
Preferably first morning urine or else the patient will be
instructed not to urinate for 2 hours prior to collection.
Specimens must be delivered
as soon as possible to the laboratory or can be kept refrigerated
prior to delivery.
