Y STRs - Genealogy Project
Genealogy has always been a fascination to many. Malta having a very
rich history has had several lineages coming from different colonists
and cultures. However studying genealogy requires large amount of research
and study, of several old logbooks, which may be sometimes impossible to get a
hold of.
MLS
Genetics made this easier. A man's patrilineal or direct father's-line
ancestry can be traced using the DNA on his Y chromosome (Y-DNA) through
Y-STR testing, as follows: This is useful because the Y chromosome, like the
patrilineal surname, passes down unchanged from father to son. The test of one individual
is then compared with another to determine the time frame in which the two individuals
shared a most recent common ancestor or MRCA.
Databases could then be developed,
by finding the most common Y-STR in a population and determining the percentage of the
Y-STR in a particular lineage.
MLSBioDNA Ltd is trying to develop
such a database. However this cannot be done without your help. At least 100 samples are required
to be able to produce the most common STRs in the population, in order to a genealogy tree to be
developed with the maltese surnames. All that is required is a DNA sample, which can be taken via the
cheek cells. A cotton swab is rubbed with the inside of the cheek.
Anyone who is interested in participating
in this project, can contact us. The first 100 samples will be free of charge, and
every participant will receive a copy of the results.
All data is confidential and will not be
given to third parties.
Relationship testing
Testing
of Y-chromosome STRs and mitochondrial DNA are also used for relationship testing
We also accept samples for these purposes. Contact us for more detail.
Non-Standard Samples
For paternity and relationship testing a buccal swab is considered
to be the standard sample taken and sent to the laboratory. If it is
not possible to provide a buccal swab, MLS BioDNA Ltd accepts other
types of samples from which DNA can be extracted. The success rate
of obtaining DNA from other samples can vary, as this depends on a
number of factors starting from the amount of biological material
present to the sample storage / transport conditions. Thus, DNA
extraction from non-standard samples is performed at an extra cost.
Non-standard samples accepted and their success rates to obtain DNA
are:
1.
Toothbrushes (High)
2. Blood (High)
3. Hair with roots (Medium)
4. Nails (Low)
5. Stamps (Very low)
6. Envelopes (Very low)
Sample Submission
Please
contact the laboratory before submitting any samples. We can provide
you with a free sample kit. Please send your
samples by mail together with the completely filled
submission form
