Paternity Testing
DNA Paternity testing is used to determine if the alleged father is
the biological father of the child. Half our genetic material (DNA)
is inherited from our mother and the other half from our father. A
paternity test compares the child’s DNA pattern with that of the
alleged father to check for biological relationship.
MLS
BioDNA Ltd offers paternity testing using 16 STRs including all
thirteen CODIS required loci. The probability of paternity achieved
can be up to 99.9999%. Sample collection for this test is
non-invasive, as only a buccal swab is required for testing.
Analysis is carried out using state of the art technology in
capillary electrophoresis and in accordance with the highest quality
standards.
The test
can be carried out by comparing the child with both mother and
alleged father (standard paternity) or by comparing the child with
only the alleged father (motherless paternity). If the alleged
father is not available one of his relatives can also be tested and
compared to the child.
Genealogy Studies
Testing
of Y-chromosome STRs and mitochondrial DNA are also used to trace
back possible origins from paternal and maternal lines,
respectively. We also accept samples for these purposes and the same
procedure for taking samples and submission applies. Turn-around
times for these tests are usually approximately eight weeks because
of extensive data analysis and interpretation.
Non-Standard Samples
For paternity and relationship testing a buccal swab is considered
to be the standard sample taken and sent to the laboratory. If it is
not possible to provide a buccal swab, MLS BioDNA Ltd accepts other
types of samples from which DNA can be extracted. The success rate
of obtaining DNA from other samples can vary, as this depends on a
number of factors starting from the amount of biological material
present to the sample storage / transport conditions. Thus, DNA
extraction from non-standard samples is performed at an extra cost.
Non-standard samples accepted and their success rates to obtain DNA
are:
1.
Toothbrushes (High)
2. Blood (High)
3. Hair with roots (Medium)
4. Nails (Low)
5. Stamps (Very low)
6. Envelopes (Very low)
